FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How to Clean Paint

Please ensure that the paint has fully dried before attempting to clean the area that you have painted. You can gently wipe the area with a slightly damp microfibre cloth in circular motion to remove any marks.

Then wipe the same area with a dry area of the microfibre cloth to dry away the water (if water is left on surface it may create a mark).

2. How Much Paint to Use

To find out how much paint to use prior to purchasing, here at Craig & Rose we have a paint calculator in which you can select the paint you want to purchase and input the measurements of the room to find out how much paint you need.

    ARTISAN SPECIAL EFFECTS:

    RUST EFFECT

How should I apply the Artisan Rust Effect paint?

    • Our Artisan Rust Effect paint contains iron particles, which can cause separation of the paint fairly quickly once sat undisturbed. The iron particles are heavy which also causes the particles sink to the bottom of the tin. Therefore, we recommend stirring the paint thoroughly before and throughout use, so the iron particles are evenly distributed throughout the tin.
    • You will need two to three thick coats of Artisan Rust Effect paint. Leave the first coat to dry for 4 hours before applying the second coat. Leave the last coat to dry at least 12 hours before applying the activator. The base layers of Artisan Rust Effect paint should be very heavy and thick. Please ensure that you are unable to see through the layers of paint before applying the Rust Activator Solution.
    • Apply the paint with a brush (do not spray or roll) in crisscross motion to create the desired effect.
    • Please refrain from sanding down any bumps after the base paint has been applied as this will remove the product from the surface you are painting and will affect the overall finish.

How should I apply the Artisan Rust Activator Solution?

    • For the application of Artisan Rust Activator Solution you will need a brush, gloves to protect your skin from the chemicals and protective eyeglasses. Apply Activator Solution in random light brush strokes to create your desired effect.
    • The rust effect will start to show within a few hours and will keep developing over time. You can apply a second coat of activator if desired, please leave a minimum 45-60 minutes between the layers.
    • You can accelerate the rusting effect with water. Spray water 2-3 times between layers of the Rust Activator Solution to deepen the effect.
    • Only use water in the summer and not the winter months due to the air in the winter months in the UK naturally being colder and more damp which can potentially cause the Rust Activator Solution to dry as a white mist rather than properly activating when water is added between coats.
    • Individual results will vary depending on the application method.
    • Always try the effect first on a spare piece of wood to get familiar with the product and application process.

How can I remove the Artisan Rust Effect finish from my walls?

To remove Artisan Rust Effect paint from the wall, follow these recommendations: Thoroughly sand down the wall, wash it with sugar soap to remove all residue, apply an undercoat, and then paint with your chosen colour.

Is Artisan Rust Effect suitable for bathrooms?

Artisan Rust Effect is a specialist paint that is not suitable for humid or high moisture areas. We cannot guarantee the quality of this finish when used in high moisture areas.

How can I protect the final effect?

You can apply furniture Wax over top of the painted area. Please note that this might darken the finish slightly, so it is suggested you test this out in a small corner of your painted surface before applying across the full area.

Is Artisan Rust Effect suitable for wood or metal?

The Rust Effect can be used on wood and metal, but it's very important to treat the wood or metal first. You can do this by using a specialized primer for wood or metal so that the effect will work to the best of its ability. We always recommend that you do a test first to see how the Artisan Rust Effect system will react to these surfaces.
