Is your room feeling flat or uninspired? Sometimes, all a space needs is a bold focal point to breathe life into it. Enter the fireplace—a classic architectural feature that naturally draw the eye, making them the perfect candidate for a dramatic upgrade. By infusing colour and bold design, you can turn this functional element into a conversation starter that anchors your entire room.

Equipment You’ll Need:

  • Dust sheet (to protect floors)
  • Sandpaper (for smoothing surfaces)
  • Undercoat (critical for adhesion)
  • Craig & Rose paint supplies:
  • Smooth Roller (for even coverage)
  • All Rounder and Detailer brushes
  • Stirrer (to mix paints thoroughly)
  • Colours from Craig & Rose’s 1829 Vintage Collection:
  • Morris Blue (a jewel-toned blue with duck egg undertones)
  • Châtelaine (a soft, apricot-inspired hue)
  • Arabian Red (a rich, fiery crimson)

Pro Tip: The premium bristles on Craig & Rose brushes minimize brush marks—key for intricate designs.

Step-by-Step Transformation:

1. Prep

Start by sanding pre-painted areas to create a smooth base. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove dust or grease, which can interfere with paint adhesion. Lay down your dust sheet to catch drips.

2. Prime

Apply an undercoat to bare or newly sanded surfaces. This step might feel tedious, but it’s non-negotiable for long-lasting, vibrant results. Let it dry completely.

3. Colour

Use the Smooth Roller to coat the fireplace and surrounding walls in Morris Blue. This opulent shade adds depth and sophistication, instantly elevating the space. For woodwork, switch to the All Rounder brush to cut in neatly.

4. Add Pattern

Here’s where the magic happens! Using painter’s tape and the Detailer brush, map out a checkerboard design on the fireplace surround. Fill alternating squares with Châtelaine (for warm, apricot softness) and Arabian Red (for bold, fiery contrast). The precision of the brushes ensures crisp lines and a professional finish.

5. Step Back and Refine

Once dry, inspect for touch-ups. Sand any rough edges gently, and reapply paint as needed.

Your fireplace is no longer just a heat source—it’s a daring focal point that commands attention. The mix of jewel tones and geometric flair injects personality into the room, proving that colour can both open up a space and infuse it with character. Don’t stop at fireplaces! Try this approach on stair risers, accent walls, or even furniture. Remember: A bold focal point doesn’t have to overwhelm. By pairing vibrant hues with clean lines, you strike the perfect balance between drama and sophistication.
